Micbar interviewed Jim. Jim is my grandfather. This is what I found out about Jim. When you have read about my project, please fill in the comment box and tell me about a senior citizen or grandparent that you know. Thanks

Jim as a small child
I was the only child in the family. We lived in Johannesburg. My dad was the manager of a bricks work, and my mom was a caretaker. In those days the popular jobs were doctors, dentists, accountants and teachers. I remember playing with my cousin when I was little and really enjoying that. I liked my bicycle, my scooter and my balls and trains.

Jim’s Primary School Days
My school was very much like Fish hoek primary. It was in Johannesburg and I walked there. We did similar subjects to you – I can remember English, Afrikaans, Arithmetic, History and Geography. I wrote in my books mainly with pencil. Computers hadn’t been invented. Schools were strict and if you were naughty you got a smack with a stick called a cane. We had to do homework. The games I liked to play the most were soccer and cricket.

Jim as a teenager
I liked to wear shorts and a T-shirt. I didn’t have a cell phone. In my spare time I liked to play with my friends. In the evenings my family read the newspaper and listened to the radio. There was no TV in those times. When I was nineteen I went on my first date. At that time people liked to go to the bioscope or to a dance or party. To me a perfect date was a lovely young lady and a lot of fun. I loved listening to rock ‘n roll music. If I went to the cionema I liked to watch cowboys and Indians fills. My mom cooked delicious meals of vegetables, potatoes, meat and fish. We had a servant who helped us clean our house. I met my wife at church!

How has South Africa changed since Jim was a child?
When I was young there was no TV and it was the Apartheid era. Travel on a holiday took a long time due to the narrow roads. There were no free ways or highways. Cars were not very fast. Life was easier in those times and much safer.

Does Jim have any interesting information about his own grandparents? My mom’s parents were both gym instructors in Germany.

What advice can Jim give to help us in our lives?
Enjoy life while you are young

Any herbs and remedies that were popular when your senior citizen was a child?

Any other interesting stories you could tell us?
I played a lot of sport such as cricket, hockey and rugby and I went on a lot of fishing trips on weekends with my uncle, aunt and cousins to the Vaal dam.
